History of Sibiu Airport

Various flying activities were pioneered on a grassy field measuring 174 hectares in 1943. LARES, the first Romanian airline, operated a fleet of Lockheed aircraft. Bucharest-Sibiu-Arad and Bucharest-Sibiu-Oradea were the initial routes. Several Romanian cities, including Bucharest, Brasov, Deva, Oradea, and Targu-Mures, were linked to Sibiu via air in 1944.

Upon its opening in 1959, the airport featured two stories, a control tower, a waiting area for 50 passengers in both directions (embarking and disembarking), and a storage room. The airport's approach and runway guiding lights were installed in 1970, allowing nighttime operations. A 2,000-meter long and 30-meter wide concrete runway. It wasn't until 1975. However, radar installations could actually be used.

The airport began accepting international passengers in 1992. By the end of that year, flights were being offered to Stuttgart and Munich. A €77 million investment in a new terminal building and a runway upgrade occurred between 2006 and 2008, marking the most effective rehabilitation program in the airport's history.
